The Department:
You will join a nationally accredited agency (one of only five agencies in the State of California) by the Commission for the Accreditation of Parks & Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) amongst a team dedicated to upholding the department's mission to promote community health and wellness while building a diverse culture that embraces change and continuous improvement.

Position:
The Aquatics Instructor is a part-time year-round position. Under the supervision of the Aquatic Supervisor and/or Recreation Supervisor, the person in this position will organize, lead and teach specialized aquatic activities and do related work as required.


*Part-time employee cannot exceed 1,000 total hours worked within one fiscal year.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct American Red Cross swimming lessons ranging from Parent/Child Aquatics to Learn to Swim Level Six
  • Promote participation, provide information on available programs and enforce required safety rules and regulations
  • Rescue persons in distress and render first aid
  • Assist in conducting special events and maintenance and operation of aquatic facilities
Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and techniques of teaching swim lessons to all ages
  • Knowledge of lifeguarding techniques, first aid, and other aquatic instruction
  • Must possess a current certificate in American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
Ability to:
  • Interact and be patient and professional with the public
  • Ability to follow class guidelines and exercises, enforce required safety rules and regulations
  • Serve as an ambassador to the Parks and Recreation Department, as well as the City of Carlsbad
Experience & Education

  • Must possess a current certificate in American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
  • Three months of experience as a swim instructor is preferred
Physical/Mental Requirements:
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach,
  • Lift 25lbs
  • exposure to outdoors; ability to travel to different sites and locations.
